Color Theory - Part 2

So, after a week studying about colors. We move on to our Final Project where we were told to choose on a theme. Below are some of the themes that we brainstormed among  our classmates:

  • Body Parts
  • Pokemon
  • Desserts
  • Carnival
  • Technologies
  • Halloween
Finally, we ended up choosing CARNIVAL!!! as our theme. The minute we confirmed on that, my head was literally thinking of this.

The task was simple. Our project is focused on color theories. So, think of something that is in a carnival and use one/more of the color theories such as Primary colors, Monochrome, or Saturated colors as long as it relates to "Color".

This is what we came up with :-

You guess right! BALLOON DARTS!!!!

Since the whole point of a carnival is to have fun, we thought that balloon darts can bring joy to people too.

Balloon Darts Test!

We decided to use Primary Colors, Pastel Colors, and Monochromatic Colors for the project.

Things that we use :-
  • Canvas (6 ft by 5ft)
  • Plywood (to support the canvas)
  • Balloons
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Darts
  • Thumbtacks

BEHOLD! Our Balloon Darts Color Theory Project!!!

Dini was so excited, she didnt want to let go of the darts.

Bottom line is, we had fun preparing it, and so did the rest of the class. I'll put the rest of the group pictures and their projects below.

COLOR THEORY!! Part 1

Hue : The combination of two primary colors

Secondary Colors : Two primary colors (Yellow, Blue, Red) that are mixed to obtain secondary colors (Green, Orange, Violet)

Tertiary Colors : The mixture between 1 Primary color and 1 Secondary Color

Tint : Adding White into the color

Shade : Adding Black into the color

Color Temperature

Warm Colors : Colors that relates to the feeling of warmth which is Red, Orange and Yellow.

Cold Colors : Blue-ish and green-ish color that associates with skies, seas, ice etc.

Color Representation

Green!
The color of nature. It represents growth and life. Besides being the most restful color to the eye, it can also improve our vision.

Red!
In Sanskrit , Rudhira means red. Most of the time we resemble our passion to this color. For example Valentine's day  is often used to express love, BUT! it actually resembles lust than love. Pink resembles love.  Therefore, Red - Passion- Love/Lust.

Purple!
It represents Royalty , express power and extravagance. Back then, producing purple is so complicated in result, purple fabric was made really expensive that only the rulers can afford.

3rd Assignment - Paper Cutouts

For this assignment. We were told to apply everything that we've learned into this exercise. Besides that, we were also told to choose a theme for it. Mine is "Seasons and Animals".

A symmetrical picture with Autumn theme

An Asymmetrical picture with Winter theme

Feedback : Ms. Lisa liked it, but only if I have more cutouts, then it'll be much more better.

Reflection : Doing this requires a lot of patience and good time management. Other than that, it also focuses on our cutting skills.

2nd Assignment - Rule Of Thirds

Task :

  • Choose a subject matter and take 50 picture of it abiding the "Rule Of Thirds".
  • Afterwards, make a video and upload it either on our blog or youtube.
Subject Matter :  Perfumes
Feedbacks on my 1st tutorial:
  • Beware of the border lines
  • Picture must not be too crowded
  • Avoid taking picture using the same background
  • Try placing the subject matter else where ( THANKS FOR THE ADVICE!)
End Product:

Feedback after my presentation:
  • She said that I've improved a lot compared to what I showed during tutorials and wished that I didn't put the Harajuku Perfume on top of the car.

Rule Of Thirds!

Lecture..

We were told to make a frame using a mounting board as our view finder. The measurement of the frame is 9x12. Basically we are suppose to fine a subject matter and capture the image using the rule of thirds.

This is the grid lines that we must abide while taking a photo using rule of thirds.

There are 7 elements that we must know in order to create an outstanding and beautiful image. They are :
  • Lines
  • Shapes
  • Texture
  • Space
  • Time & Motion
  • Color
  • Typography
    • Serif  ( tail )
    • San- Serif (no tail)
Principles Of Design
  1. Unity & Variety
  2. Balance
  3. Scale & Proportion
  4. Focal Point ( Dominance)
  5. Rhythm & Repetition
Phases of design & Composition

1st Assignment - Art Movement

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

  • Also known as Gestural Abstraction - (Techniques include : Dripping, Dabbing, Smearing, Flinging paint)
  • Better know as Action Painting
For my first assignment. I was told to study the various Art Movement throughout history and find one that represents me as a designer.

  1. Research on an Art Movement that I feel represents me best
  2. Design a self-portrait based on that particular Art Movement that I chose
  3. Must be able to understand and capture the essence of the genre selected
After doing research on Abstract Expressionism. I started practicing on an A3 and A1 paper. Below are the results :
1st Painting
2nd Painting
 3rd Painting
 4th Painting

 5th Painting
Final Painting. For this one I didn't use any brush since all of them are broken and ruined after my 3rd painting. So, i used my hand instead.

SO! Basically! Abstract Expressionism has been a movement since 1940s after World War II. One of the person who actually does Abstract Expressionism is Jackson Pollock - also known as Jack the Dripper (he used the dripping technique). He didnt use an easel to hold his canvas however he prefers to tack the unstretched canvas to the floor or the hard wall Since he feels more at ease. I quote
When I'm in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image. Because the painting has a life of its own. ~Jackson Pollock
He slowly continued to get further away from the usual painting tools and started using knives, sticks, trowels. He even used an Impasto with sand and a broken glass.

In Abstract Expressionism, There are two types of painting.
  1. Action Painting
  2. Color Field Painting
Below are the artwork of a few artist that I find very interesting.

Principle Of Design 1st class!

Two weeks ago, I attended my first Principle Of Design class. I have no idea what I was going to do at that moment. So, my lecturer - Miss Lisa came in and gave a brief explanation about what Principle of Design is all about. She showed us various types of Art Movements whereby some, i'm not quite familiar with. Some of the art movement that I haven't heard of was Fauvism, De Stijl and Steampunk. And because I didn't know those art movements that Miss Lisa stated, I wasn't proud of myself and started googling about it once I got home.

After the lecture, we were given 2 hours to start identifying ourselves and make a portrait out of it. We could use anything we want. So, I went to find unused things to start my portrait since i'm not so good at drawing faces. Then, I started mumbling, trying to elaborate about myself. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. After a while I finally got to identify 'me' and put it down in words. So based on the photo above, I made a mind map and a portrait made out of trash. 2 hours passed, and I had to present what I did and unfortunately, my elaboration wasn't precise. Base line, I need to read/ think more before I present something so that I can fully understand what I'm presenting.
